George Stoneman Civil War Union Major General Cavalry Commander Autograph'Rare

  
[1822 1894] was a career United States Army officer who served in the Mexican American War, the Yuma War and the American Civil War. General Stoneman began the Civil War as the adjutant for General George McCellan at the Peninsula Campaign.

The general then took command of the III Corps and fought at Fredericksburg where his division helped drive back a Confederate assault. In May 1863, General Hooker made Stoneman his cavalry commander for the Army of the Potomac for the battle of Chancellorsville. In 1864, Stoneman assumed command of Cavalry Corps for the Army of the Ohio, after an unsuccessful raid of the infamous Andersonville Prison, he was captured, becoming the highest-ranking Union prisoner of war but was released three months later.

In March of 1865, he led a raid into Virginia and North Carolina, where his division crippled Confederate infrastructure, destroyed several bridges and railroads. After the war he commanded the Department of Tennessee, and he retired from the army in 1871. The autograph is signed''George Stoneman Maj gen Vol Mey 4th U. Cavalry'' in black fountain pen.

The page measures 5.25 x 1.75 inches [displayed] it has trivial toning otherwise in near fine condition. The autograph has been attractively matted and framed along with a formal military portrait of the general to the dimension of 14.00 x 11.00 inches. [Interesting Note, Stoneman's raids in the last weeks of the war were memorialized by songwriter Robbie Robertson of the Band, in the song''The night They Drove Old Dixie Down'']. The autograph is authentic, uncommon and is a desirable example of this prominent Army commander.
