Includes Fifteen Steel Plate Engraved Portraits. No Missing Pages, Maps or Portraits. The binding shows LITTLE to NO. Oiling throughout the spine and covers.The spine is VERY SLIGHTLY sunned. There are a couple TINY (1/16" TO 1/8") cracks in the upper edge of the spine cloth.
There are NO cracks to the lower edge of the spine cloth. There is a TINY (pea sized) scuff mark near the lower left corner of the front cover. The exterior hinges are NOT cracked--both. Exterior hinges remain quite functional and are holding VERY STRONG.
The four corners of the book show only a VERY SLIGHT HINT of minor. Bumping and remain sharp and square. The Gold Gilt on the spine and front cover remains BRIGHT and VIBRIANT with NO loss.
The black blind-stamped embossing throughout the spine and front cover remains bold with NO loss. The page edges are VERY LIGHTLY. Age toned with only a HINT of dust dulling along the top edge.
The book stands straight and tall on its own and is NOT askew. At rest, the book does NOT pop open.
The end papers are pale yellow in color. The paste down portion of the front and rear endpapers are both holding firmly to the book covers. There is an ink signature at the top of the front paste down page (see photo). There are two ink signatures dated 1875 at the top of the second front free end paper (see photo). The front interior (paper) hinge has a tightly closed hairline crack front top to bottom, not effecting the integrity of the front hinge. Quite functional and is holding VERY STRONG. The rear interior (paper) hinge is NOT cracked, remains quite.Functional and is holding VERY STRONG. The text block remains tight with NO loose signatures (gatherings). There are NO pulls or separations within the text block.
There are NO missing or loose pages throughout the book. There are NO torn pages throughout the book. The pages throughout the book are a high quality thick paper stock. The portrait pages are a high quality thick card stock. Each portrait is protected by an original tissue guard, none of which is torn or missing. The pages throughout the book are crisp, clean, very lightly and very evenly age toned with only a HINT of f. Oxing to the first few pages (see attached photos as an example).The fold-out map is in perfect condition with NO rips, tears or creases. The page corners throughout the book remain sharp and square with NO folded pages. There are NO library markings or personal book plates throughout the book.
There are NO inscriptions throughout the book. Other than the signatures (described above) there are NO other signs of pencil or ink throughout the pages of the book. There are NO signs of water damage throughout the book.
The book has NO smoke, mildew or other unusual odors. It appears as though this book was rarely if ever read from cover to cover.
