General Jefferson C. Davis Civil War Commander Killed Union Officer Autograph
Jefferson Columbus Davis [1828 1879] was a controversial American Union Army officer who in 1862 killed his commander Union general William Nelson over his remarks about General Davis's performance. General Davis served with distinction during the early part of the American Civil War and was a veteran of the Mexican American War. On September 28, Davis confronted Nelson about previous negative comments directed towards him by Nelson demanding an apology.
General Nelson refused, which set in motion events which finalized with General Davis shooting General Nelson one time in the heart. Davis stayed at the location and was arrested and charged with the murder of General Nelson. In the end, Davis was actually released and never tried for the murder, with the main reason being as per commanding general D. Buell,''I can't spare officers from the army now''.
