General Henry Larcom Abbott, a West Point classmate of JEB Stuart was an Army Engineer of note before the War as Topo Engineer for the Transcontinental Railroad Survey and a pioneer in the study of the Mississippi River. He commanded the siege artillery at Petersburg & at Fort Fisher and was a notable postwar US Army Engineer Major General Nathaniel P Banks was the commander of occupied New Orleans, Louisiana after Butler was removed.
