Hartranft was awarded the CMOH for bravery at First Manassas, and became the Colonel of the 51st Pennsylvania, rising to the rank of Brigadier General in 1864. He led the 51st at the Battle for the Stone Bridge of Antietam, Maryland and as brigadier general commanded men at the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and in the Virginia Campaigns of 1864-5. He also served as Special Provost Marshal for the Execution of the Lincoln Conspirators. Postwar, he served as National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and became Governor of the State of Pennsylvania after serving as State Auditor. He is buried in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
An Original State of Pennsylvania Treasurer Certificate paying Lt William R Thatcher for his services the 198th Pennsylvania Infantry. The handsome black/white/red certificate is approx 7 x 4, an signed in ink on the front by General Hartfranft as State Auditor.
Lieutenant Thatcher signs on the certificate reverse "Wm R Thatcher". Minor age spots, edge wear, Overall VG. Lt Thatcher served with the 198th Pennsylvania which saw hard fighting in it's one year of service, including heavy losses 29th March, 1865 at the Battle of Gravelly Run, (Lewis' Farm) Virginia.
