Colonel James C Biddle 17th & 27th Pennsylvania Volunteers enlisted as a a private, 17th Penn Infantry, and was commissioned an officer on the staff of General Thomas Williams during the landing at Hatteras Inlet and capture of the Fort. An Original Civil War letter from Biddle to his wife Gertrude (nicknamed "Biddie"), undated, written early 1862 as a newlywed, full of terms of endearment and description of life on the Island. He begins mid-sentence- on first page in describing life at Hatteras, living on the beach, mentions a letter from C. Biddle (his brother who died Feb, 1862) describes his horse & beach rides. He reports a French Man of War grounded here, the crew abandoned her and blew her up. He mentions officers inquiring for his brother, Capt CK Biddle, and expects Captain Ricketts to arrive via a flag of truce, noting Ricketts is to be promoted fo his part in the Battle of Bull Run.

He misses their brief time together as newlyweds and hopes to reunite when McClellan advances and ends the War. Captain Stewart & the General (Williams) arrived and describe Hatteras as a "rather uncouth place". He believes Fort Hatteras is impregnable, and hopes the General will move HQ as this area is uninhabited. He names the officers on General Williams staff in our mess, crowded into our wall tent.. Comes w service info- He later served on General Meade's staff to the end of the War.

Many of his letters are preserved in the Pennsylvania Historical Society Archives. 4pp 8 x 10 ink. Nicely written letter by a notable officer despite being Incomplete. NOTE: Any repair to a paper item is listed. I use only museum curator approved archival repair tape.
