Davis was the son of prominent American politician "Honest" John Davis, and served as a Unitarian minister before entering the United States Army. He earned the rank of Brigadier General in 1865, repelling several Confederate attacks during the Civil War. In 1870, he boarded the SS Cambria to tour Europe, but the vessel sank off the coast of Ireland.
