Colonel Alexander Gardiner of Claremont, New Hampshire was mortally wounded leading the men of the 14th NHV in the Sept 19, 1864 Assault at the Battle of Winchester (Opequon), where the 14th suffered severe casualties. Gardiner was posthumously brevetted Brigadier General. An original Civil War New Hampshire Noncom Officers Appointment issued to Corporal Henry P Page, Company K, Dec 18, 1862. The 1p 8 x 9 Appointment bears the illus of the New Hampshire State Seal and is signed by both Colonel Robert Wilson (possibly preprinted) and is ink signed by Alexander Gardiner when he was Adjutant of the 14th. 1p 8 x 9 ptd/ink.

Folds, age stains, edge wear, 19th century linen tape on the reverse folds, Overall Good. Comes w service info for General Gardiner & for Corporal Page who served 3 years, rising to 2nd Lieutenant rank. General Orders and other imprints.
