This is one of the rarest and important civil war period Captain Armstrong Custer images. Hand painted 1863 salt print attributed to Henry Ulke , Washington D. This is one of the rarest and earliest large imperial size (10 5/8 x 13 5/8 inches) photographs. Images like this of Custer are exceptionally scarce on the market. This photo was taken by Ulke in his Washington studio in 1863. Ulke was a skilled and professional painter as well as a leading photographer of the period, This photo taken at the end of April 1863 and represents Custer and his close friend from West Point , Captain Leroy Elbert. This photo known only as Katz (K-13). Katz has listed this image as likely from a lost cdv , however the exact image K-13 is a direct image from this primary source image. It is there is no other known hand painted image of this important image of Custer. Under close observation, one can see the original salt print and the over-laying water color applied by Ulke. The paper can be attributed as early stock by the metal fragment artifact that can be seen below his right captain's bar (2nd to last photo below).

This tiny spot upon magnification, shows the fern like metal fragment embedded in the paper support. The hand coloring shows typical differentiated paint characteristics found in hand painted salt prints of the period. In particular the white paint found on the collar is often found to be thicker than some of the other washes used. The reverse shows period staining from the original framing wood board on to the reverse side of the photographic paper.

This is guaranteed to be an image from the Civil War period. This is a once in a life time opportunity to own an exceptionally rare and important historical period c. 1863 image of Captain Custer in full length civil War uniform and represented in this imperial size.
