General Edward Ord Civil War, Army Engineer, Autograph Designed Fort Houston

  

General Edward Otho Cresap Ord [1818 1883] was an American engineer and major general of the Union Army. He began his military career in 1839 and was a veteran of the Seminole Wars, the Indian Wars and the American Civil War. Promoted to general in 1862, he commanded XXII, XVIII, XXIV Corps and the Army of the James and commanded in numerous major battles. In 1865, he commanded the Army of James and played a major role in the breakthrough at Petersburg and was also instrumental in Lee's surrender at Appomattox. At the time of the surrender, general Sherdan stated,''Ors's action were one of the chief causes of Lee's surrender''.

During the Reconstruction, Ord was assigned by General Grant to command the Army of Occupation at Richmond. After the war he commanded out west until his death from yellow fever in 1883. Is signed''Yours truly E. Ord Maj Genl'' in black fountain pen. The page measures 4.50 x 2.50 inches, with trivial toning otherwise it is in fine condition and affixed to a page.
