Banks [1816 1894] was an American politician and a Union general during the American Civil War. Upon the outbreak of the war Banks was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as one of the first''political'' major generals over the heads of West Point regulars and served from 1861 until 1864. After the war he served as the 24th Governor of Massachusetts, a Member of the U.

S house of Representatives, and as the 21st Speaker of the House. Banks signed on a page. The autograph is signed''Nathaniel P. Banks Waltham, Massachusetts'' in blue fountain pen and the page measure 6.00 x 3.00 inches and is in fine condition. The page has a unidentified autograph on the verso.
