CIVIL War General Robert Granger Nashville Tennessee Ordnance
An original Civil War Certificate for Sergeant Richard Pitts at Nashville, Tennessee, March 31, 1864 to receive pay for mess rations ate in the town of Nashville, " it being impracticable for the Sergeant to cook his rations in the Ordnance Buildings where there is a large quantity of powder and where he is the whole day on guard by my order", signed by Captain EF Townsend, 16th Infantry & ordnance officer, and approved and signed by Brigadiers General RS Granger, Commanding. The 1p 8 x 14 ink Certificate is also sgd by Sergeant Pitts for receipt of his mess funds. The reverse has a Nashville, Tennessee stamped seal. General Robert Seaman Granger, a native of Zanesville, Ohio, a notable Prewar West Point combat commander on the Texas Frontier. In 1862 he organized the Mansfield Brigade, Ohio and served in Kentucky & Tennessee, successfully fighting Forrest, Wheeler & Hood.
