CIVIL War General Andrew A Humphreys Letter 1875

  
Civil War General AA Humphreys, son of a respectable Quaker Family (and graduate of Moravian College) was a notable West Point officer Topographic Engineering who surveyed the Transcontinental Railroad Routes and the Mississippi River Delta before the War. He served as a combat commander during the Civil War and was honored by his men for his personal courage: he personally lead his Division in the Assault on Marye's Heights, Battle of Fredericksburg (where he had 2 horses shot from under him and lost most of his staff), for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was also distinguished at Gettysburg, where he rallied his men and helped stem the Confederate onslaught at the Peach Orchard, Gettysburg, July 2.

Humphreys commanded the 2nd Army Corp in the battles at Petersburg & the pursuit of Lee's Army to Saylors Creek & Appomattox. Humphreys also wrote a classic first hand account of the Campaigns of 1864-65. He is honored internationally for his contributions to the understanding of river flooding and navigation and a founder of the National Academy of Science.
