C1862 Original CDV Confederate General Joseph Fighting Joe Wheeler CIVIL War
Original carte de visite, studio portrait of subject wearing double-breasted uniform frock coat. Published in New York by E. Albumen print: 3 1/4" x 2", mounted to card measuring 4" x 2 3/8". Recto bordered in gold, publisher's backstamp and cancelled 2c revenue stamp to verso. Period penciled identification both sides. Slight agewear, corners clipped, else very good.
Wheeler is known for having served both as a cavalry general in the C. During the Civil War, and then as a general in the U. Army during both the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War.
For much of the Civil War he served as the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee and fought most of its battles in the Western Theater.
