1862 Civil War Doc. Signed by Confederate Generals Roger Pryor and Samuel French

  

An interesting 1862 Confederate document endorsement-signed by Generals Roger A. Pryor and General Samuel G. The document is a letter written to Pryor by Major F. Boggs, commander of a battalion of light artillery batteries stationed at Franklin, Virginia--west of Suffolk.

The request went up the chain of command with autograph endorsements by Pryor, Smith, Smiths adjutant George G. Garrisson, a Major Martin from General G. Smiths staff, and Colonel John C. Shields, commanding the Camp of Instruction. The original request from Boggs measures about 7 x 9 and is in very good condition with light foxing and toning. The accompanying blue sheet, 9 x 7 3/4, contains additional endorsements and details about Boggss missing officers. The original request from Boggs reads.

Hd Qrs 1st Bat Lt Artillery. About the 3d of Sept I was ordered to the Army of the Potomac with a portion of my Battalion and required to leave two Companies & a part of my staff at Camp Lee. On my return I learned that the Surgeon & Quarter Master had both been detailed, but no official notice has ever been given me. In view of the above statement I respectfully ask for instructions in reporting these officers.
