The covers show some light scuffing and soiling, edge-wear, and light rubbing to the corners and spine-ends. The contents are bright and generally clean with illustrations, but also with some light scattered foxing to a few pages near the illustrations.
There is a previous owner inscription at the top of the front free end-page which states, Compliments of David Shields, Lieutenant / Personal Aide-de-camp to General Alexander Hays. David Shields, along with General Hays were part of "dragging the rebel flag" at Gettysburg after Pickett's Charge. This book is scarce in the trade. Graduated from West Point in 1844.
