RECOLLECTIONS AND LETTERS OF GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE BY HIS SON CAPTAIN ROBERT E. FIRST EDITION NEAR FINE CONDITION Handsome Cover Design Featuring Confederate Flag Image Original, Clean, Sharp, Bright, Solidly Bound, Antique Book Excellent Collection of Letters and Recollections of General Lee Frontispiece Illustration of Lee; Contains Illustrations Throughout; Fully Indexed HANDSOMELY PUBLISHED BY DOUBLEDAY, PAGE & COMPANY NEW YORK, IN 1904 In 1904 General Robert E. Lees son produced this book, The Recollections and Letters, a book made up primarily of the generals personal correspondence, much of which contains Civil War content and much being written to his wife and children. The book provided touching insights into the generals Civil War service as well as into his family life, allowing readers to connect with him on a more human level. Any study of General Lee, the South, or the Civil War is incomplete without this book. A wonderful collection of his individual letters and correspondences with additional highlights provided by his son, Captain Robert E. Contents Include: Services in the United States Army, The Confederate General, Letters to Wife and Daughters, Army Life of Robert the Younger, The Army of Northern Virginia, The Winter of 1863-4, Fronting the Army of the Potomac, The Surrender, The Private Citizen, President of Washington College, The Idol of the South, Lees Opinion Upon the Late War, Family Affairs, An Ideal Father, Mountain Rides, An Advisor of Young Men, The Reconstruction Period, Mrs. Lee, Lees Letters to His Sons, The New Home in Lexington, Failing Health, The Southern Trip, A Round of Visits, Last Days. The book also has an Index. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This original, 115-year old, antique book is in excellent overall condition. This book is handsomely bound in Confederate gray covers with gold, impressed lettering on the spine and a decorative image of the Confederate flag surrounded by a green wreath on a gold background on the cover. The exterior is generally clean with not bumping. It has light rubbing and edge wear. The gold, spine lettering has faded some, but can still be read. The binding is solid throughout the book; it has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition.

The book has a prior-owner signature dated 1906, in ink, on the front end page as shown. I have not evaluated this signature to determine if it is to a Civil War soldier. There is no other writing in the book. The book has no smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboard, or other markings. It is not an ex-library book.

It has no unique smells. The book has a frontispiece illustration of General Lee in uniform and is illustrated throughout. All illustrations have tissue guards and all are fine and clean. The book contains 461 pages. Overall this is a very nice condition, antique book.
