Up for sale is an original Civil War envelope addressed by General William Tecumseh Sherman to his Brother in law Philemon Ewing, the brother of Sherman's wife Ellen. Inside the envelope was which is believed to be a tin type image of Willie Sherman, eldest son to the General who would sadly die after visiting him at the Vicksburg campaign of typhoid fever.
The tin type image shows the image of Willie posing with the photographer in the field. Along with the grouping was a period pair of child's boots, and a nicely hand carved wooden sword, which was said to be presented to Willie when a Michigan Unit made him their Honorary Sergeant.
I still have all items from the collection but have decided to start parting the items out. The envelope is in overall good condition with minor staining, and minimal edge wear. April 3, just prior to the start of Vicksburg. Ewing Lancaster, Ohio in period ink, with a 3 cent canceled stamp.
