This original, antiquarian book was prepared by General Lees military secretary, General A. General Long knew General Lee in the pre-war army and was with him from their involvement in Northwest Virginia and the establishment of sea coast defenses through the completion of the war at Appomattox. As a military secretary, Long had extensive, direct access to Lee and clearly was among his most frequent contacts.
Long drew this association as well as on his own resources to obtain extensive and previously unavailable materials and resources to produce this extensive biography of General Lee. As a member of Lees staff, he had contact with Lees family members after the war with access to correspondence.
