Stuart (18331864) was a fabled Confederate general best known for his consummate skill in reconnaissance and as a cavalry officer. After leading successful offensive actions during the Northern Virginia Campaign, as well as a late disastrous showing at the Battle of Gettysburg, which led to a personal rebuke by Lee, Stuart was killed during the Overland Campaign at the age of 31. Genl, with his rank also in his hand, likely clipped from a document, measuring 2.5 by 1.25 inches, and in very good condition with adhesive staining through some of the signature from the verso and having been attached to a larger sheet of paper measuring 4.25 by 2.5 inches. After distinguishing himself at the First Battle of Bull Run, Stuart was promoted to brigadier general and placed in command of the cavalry brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia in September 1861.
