In 1864 the Northern Iowa Border Counties requested arms to form militia units to defend the settlers against the Sioux after the Minnesota Indian Uprisings. An original letter from Sh Judd at Brownville, Iowa to Iowa Adjutant General NB Baker requesting 40 stands of arms & equipment & tactics manuals w details governing formation of the militia for local defense. 1p 8 x 6 ink. The Undated letter is from Brownville Pioneer SH Judd, and has a signed note reply from General Baker as Adjutant General.

Comes w bio info for General Baker who was, who's heroic efforts put the Iowa boys in the field, uniformed and equipped, while building camps, forming regiments, aiding soldier's wives and widows, hunting down deserters and recognized as the man in charge of the Hawkeye war effort.
