General Philip Sheridan Prominent Union General Civil War Autograph''Rare'

  
Philip Henry Sheridan [1831 1888] was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. Sheridan began his military career in 1853, and his is noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with general-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the east. Sheridan was considered a highly competent commander and is well remembered for defeating Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley and his scorched earth tactics he implemented in the latter part of the war. In 1865, Sheridan and his cavalry pursued General Robert E. Lee and he was instrumental in forcing Lee's surrender at Appomattox. He fought in the Indian Wars of the Great Plains and was appointed as general-in-chief of the U.

Promoted to the rank of General of the Army during the term of President Grover Cleveland. General Sheridan died of a heart attack on August 5, 1888, at the age of 57.
