General James Shields [1806 1879] was an Irish American politician, lawyer and United States Army officer, who was the only person in U. History to serve as a Senator for three different states, and one of only two persons to represent multiple states in the U.

Shields began his military career in 1835 and served in the Second Seminole War, the Mexican American War and the American Civil War. During the Civil War he commanded the 2nd Division of the V Corps, Army of the Potomac during the Valley Campaign 1862. His troops inflicted the only tactical defeat of General Thomas''Stonewall'' Jackson during the battle, in which Shields was also wounded. After the war he served as governor and U. Is signed''Illinois James Shields'' in black fountain pen.
