Diary of General S. M. Jackson for the Year 1862 Civil War 11th Pennsylvania

  

Jackson for the Year 1862" is a 64 page, 5"x7.5 chord-bound softcover published circa 1925. There's a 2-page introduction by John H. Jackson of Apollo, Pennsylvania, likely General Samuel McCartney Jackson's son and the book's publisher. The General commanded the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment (also known as the 40th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry) during the Civil War and kept this diary throughout 1862. Here's a list of the Regiment's activities during that year.

Unfortunately Jackson kept his diary entries to several terse sentences no matter the events of the day. At Camp Pierpont, near Langley, Va. Expedition to Grinnell's Farm December 6, 1861. McDowell's advance on Falmouth April 9-19. Duty at Manassas Junction, Catlett's Station, and Falmouth, until June.

Moved to White House June 9-12. Seven Days before Richmond June 25-July 1. Battles of Mechanicsville June 26, Gaines's Mill June 27 (most of the regiment captured and exchanged August 5, 1862), Charles City Cross Roads, Glendale, June 30, Malvern Hill July 1. At Harrison's Landing until August 16. Movement to join Pope August 16-26.

Battle of Groveton August 29. Second Battle of Bull Run August 30. Battle of South Mountain, Md. Battle of Antietam September 16-17.

Duty in Maryland until October 30. In good condition with cover soiling, chips and tears where it extends past the text block, creases to the back. There's a bookplate on the inside front cover and a note at the bottom of the title page.
