General Matthew Calbraith Butler [1836 1909] was a Confederate military commander, attorney and politician from South Carolina. He began the war as a cavalry commander serving in Hampton's Legion and was seriously wounded at the Battle of Brandy Station. After the war he served as a U. Senator from South Carolina from 1877 - 1895.
