CIVIL War Lincoln Execution Of Rebel Prisoners Order Army & Navy News 1863
In July, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order in response to Jefferson Davis' Order to execute Union officers captured leading black soldiers. An Original Complete 16pp Issue of the Army & Navy Gazette incl Protection of Prisoners of War with, Lincoln's Order for the protection of POWs - for every Union officer executed, a rebel officer of equal or higher rank will suffer the same fate- Lincoln demands that Union POWs be treated as such, regardless of color. Other Command Orders specifically name Rebel Officers to be kept in solitary confinement, including General WH Lee, in retaliation for such treatment of Union prisoners. The news also includes General Sherman's Complete Report on the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, with other war news, also the Suspension of the Writ of Habeas Corpus, a Directory of Army commanders for various branches of the service and a List of all US General Hospitals for Washington DC, Georgetown and Alexandria.
