An Original Civil War "Garibaldi Guard" Certificate of Enrollment with a large printed heading "Garibaldi Guards First Regiment Foreign Rifles" was issued to Private Richard Marschall of Manhattan "living in 127th Avenue, B " certifying that the Private is enrolled in Company C and has a mother and sister dependent upon the Union Relief Committee for Assistance. The striking Certificate bears the bold signature "D'Utassy" as Colonel of the Regiment.
A large red ink script "11th Ward" denotes the soldier's home iin the 11th Ward, known as Kleindeutschland, for it's largely German community and also called "Beerdom" for its plethora of German beer halls and drunken brawls. The address was presumably the home of Private Marschall's family who would receive aid from the Union Relief Committee. 1p 8 x 5 w edge wear, age stains Overall VG. The Certificate came with this original Letter from "Richard", at Roache's Hill, Virginia, August 1, 1861 written entirely in German, to his " Liebe Mutter" (Dearest Mother), mentions names, presumably of comrades or family, & includes a few translatable words such as "Insubordination". (The letter is not translated). The 2pp Complete 8 x 5" ink Letter has a striking patriotic color illustration image of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth w the caption "Remember! And is simply signed "Richard", who I assume was Richard Marschall, for whom the the Certificate was issued.Comes w service info-The soldier, Richard Marschall was a sergeant in the Garibaldi Guard, serving to October 1861.
