Stereoview showing a domestic scene. On the back is printed, The General Assembly of 1861. This must be in reference to the meeting of the Presbyterian Church in 1861 where Northern church delegates voted a resolution of support for the Union, leading the southern delegates to withdraw. In December 1861 commissioners from forty-seven southern presbyteries created the Presbyterian Church of the Confederate States of American. How the Presbyterian General Assembly of 1861 relates to the image in this stereoview we do not know. Interesting features of the stereoview are as follows: One of the doors shown in the room appears to be the door to a walk-in size safe. The door appears to be iron with heavy iron straps reinforced with rivets. To the left of the safe door and on a table appears to be a book press. Two women work on their sewing. A man reads a paper. Another man works at a desk, A younger man, representing a son perhaps, is sitting in front of the desk doing something that can't be made out. He appears to have moved his hands during the exposure. Framed prints and artwork are hung salon style on the walls. The stereoview measures 6 7/8 inches by 3 1/4 inches. On the back is written in flowing script in period: "Ed Peabody from his friend" which is followed by a name that I cannot read which is followed by the date, July 28, 1865. The condition of this stereoview can be seen in the accompanying image.

There is some light surface soil and a light stain on the upper right front corner that goes across the image about one inch by three quarters of an inch. There are several pin holes in the left margin outside of the image area. There are two very tiny pinholes in the upper left corner of the image. Both of the left corners are bumped and have a bit of softness.

The reference number for this item is #3481.
