Major John Clowney commanded the 30th Wisconsin Volunteers sent by General Sibley to the Dakotas to build Fort Wadsworth, protecting the settlers from the Sioux during the Red Cloud War. Major Clowney vowed that he could "resist all the Indians in the Northwest". The fort was constructed of hewn logs, with 2 log blockhouses. An Original Civil War List of Stores issued to Major Clowney, 30th Regt Wis Inf, October 1863 at Camp Washburn listing a large assortment of building supplies, certifying the above items have been transferred to Major John Clowney as Commander at Camp Washburn (Milwaukee) by LTR W Hubbs. The Fort was renamed Fort Sisseton in 1876 and remained active until 1889.
The 30th Wisconsin was composed of lumberrmen, miners and some Chippewa Indians. And other Dakota posts during General Alfred Sully's Expedition against the Lakota.
