Goldsborough held several sea commands during the Civil War, including that of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Uring Goldsborough's command of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, which he commanded from its inception in Sept. 1861, he led his fleet off North Carolina, where in cooperation with troops under Gen. Burnside, he captured Roanoke Island 8 Feb.

1862 and destroyed a small Confederate fleet.
