Philip Henry Sheridan was a career United States Army officer and a prominent Union General during the American Civil War. In 1864, he led the Union victory in the Shenandoah Valley. By 1865, his cavalry pursued General Robert E. Lee and contributed to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Following the war, Sheridan served as military commander of Louisiana and Texas (1867) and conducted Indian campaigns (1868-69).

He was promoted to lieutenant general and eventually became the General-in-Chief of the U. The original portrait used for many of these CDVs was taken in Matthew Brady's studio. These were produced primarily in the 1860s and 1870s.
