Killed in Action near Harrisonburg, Virginia June 6, 1862. After his death he was taken to the Frank kemper house in Port Republic.

Legend holds that the women of Port Republic prepared his body for burial, placing a red rose over the wound where the bullet entered. The body, was wrapped in a Confederate flag, was laid in the front corner room of the house, under a window, where his remains were photographed. This carte de visite photograph is taken from the original postmortem view, by a photographer which has taken a poetic license by enhancing the photo and opening his eyes to make the general appear life like.
