GENERAL LEE by Fitzhugh Lee. Appleton and Company - 1897. Antique 1897 printing of General Lee by Fitzhugh Lee, Robert E. Lee's nephew and Confederate cavalry commander. Appleton and Company as part of the Great Commanders series.

Of particular interest is the period handwritten provenance inscription on the inside cover, dated November 1905. Historical correspondence documents Mary Tabb Lee using the designation Mrs. The inscription itself specifically identifies Mrs.

Lee as The General's daughter-in-law. This book is NOT being represented as signed or personally inscribed by Mary Tabb Bolling Lee. The period inscription records the book as having come From Mrs. No independent documentation has been located proving who physically wrote the inscription or independently documenting the transfer. The association is particularly interesting because the book concerns Robert E. Lee, was written by his nephew Fitzhugh Lee, and the November 1905 inscription records the book as having come from Robert E. The copy retains its Robert E. Lee portrait frontispiece and all three maps called for in the volume.

Folding map covering sections of Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland. The Battlefield of Gettysburg, Pa.

July 1, 2 and 3, 1863. Large folding Central Virginia map. The folding maps remain present and show their original folds.

This copy is being accurately represented as an 1897 printing and NOT as the 1894 first edition. Antique book showing age and use. Original cloth binding has rubbing, staining/soiling, edge and corner wear, and fraying/loss around portions of the spine ends and cloth. Rear inner hinge shows separation/wear but remains attached. Pages exhibit normal age toning and occasional age-related wear.

The maps have their original folds and should be handled carefully. The handwritten November 1905 provenance inscription is faded but remains legible.

Please examine all photographs carefully. Photographs show the actual book being offered and form an important part of the condition description.

The asking price reflects not simply the 1897 printing itself, but the combination of the complete map suite, period November 1905 provenance inscription, and the recorded association with Mrs. Lee, identified in the inscription as Robert E.

An unusual association copy of interest to collectors of Robert E. Lee, the Lee family, Civil War history, Virginia history, military history, and 19th-century books.
