Original 1871 handwritten War Department letter from the Adjutant General's Office in Washington, D. Van Valkenburgh of Fulton, Oswego County, New York. The letter concerns Captain Van Valkenburgh's request for a replacement copy of his military discharge after the original had been lost. The document states he needed proof of service in order to join the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the prominent Union Civil War veterans organization. The War Department confirms from official records that he was honorably discharged as a Captain of New York Cavalry on January 19, 1865.
