1863 Civil War Winfield Scott Patriotic Cover Port Tobacco MD. Original Civil War patriotic cover featuring General Winfield Scott, the longtime U. Army general and Union commander-in-chief at the beginning of the Civil War. The elaborate all-over blue design depicts Scott in uniform within an ornate oval surrounded by American flags and military motifs.

The ribbon above the portrait reads "OUR COMMANDER IN CHIEF, " while the large patriotic inscription reads. "THE WAR FOR THE UNION". Addressed in period handwriting to: Mrs.

Betsey Gurney, East Abington, Mass. A pencil notation on the reverse reads May 25, 1863, providing a contemporary date for the cover. Port Tobacco, Maryland, is an especially interesting Civil War origin. Located in Charles County, the community was known for strong Southern sympathies even while Union troops operated in the area. The cover remains remarkably presentable for its age, with the extensive blue patriotic design, portrait, lettering and address all readily visible.

From the collection of Dr. Doc's collection has remained with his family for more than eight decades.
