Civil War Union Brevet Major General. He served in the Civil War first as Colonel and commander of the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 21st Veterans Reserve Corps. For a time near the end of the war he was the Assistant Provost Marshal for Trenton, New Jersey.
On April 15, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant services in the field", and Major General, US Volunteers for "faithful and gallant conduct throughout the war".
