This is for an original document which has been signed 4 different times by Confederate General James Simons. Simons had been the Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives when he was appointed by President Jefferson Davis as the first General Officer of the Confederacy. As Brigadier General of the South Carolina Militia Fourth Infantry Brigade he would lead the first attack on Fort Sumter on April 12 1961, forcing Major Robert Anderson to surrender the following day while escaping with the American flag. Even though there were no fatalities, this would become the first battle of the American Civil War. Simons would resign his command in July of 1961 due to an ongoing battle with South Carolina Governor Francis Pickens. After resigning, Simons would actually fight as a private in an artillery unit before being authorized by Jefferson Davis to organize a Charleston legion, but instead would spend the rest of the war focusing on his law practice. An extremely rare signature, this document provides four James Simons signatures. There are actual 5 different Simons signatures but I believe that one is in a different hand.

Some collectors like to make their own cut autograph cards and this document would provide four signatures for four such cards. Simons prospered enough from his law practice during the war that from 1863 through 1869 he served as a Trustee of the University of South Carolina. A true rarity from the Civil War. The letter comes with a copy of a CDV of the Confederate General.
