David Hunter [1802 1886] was a United States career Army officer and Union general during the American Civil War where he distinguished himself at the Valley Campaigns. General Hunter commanded the Departments of Kansas, the West and the South at numerous key battles.
General Hunter achieved notability for his unauthorized 1862 order emancipating slaves in three Southern states. After the war he served as the president of the military commission trying the conspirators involved in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
