And was eventually restored to duty and credited with saving Pope's Army from destruction. Postwar Confederate General EP Alexander cites Porter's courage and judgement stated that Porter's dismissal was on of the "greatest fruits of the Confederate Victory at 2nd Manassas".
Porter was fully exonorated in 1886 after a special military commission reviewed his dismissal and concluded that his action at Manassas probably saved Popes Army of Virginia.
