Civil War Union Major General. Born in Nelson, New York, he graduated from West Point US Military academy in 1851 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Infantry.
He participated in the expedition against the Apache in 1857, the Navajo expedition of 1858 and the defense of Fort Defiance in 1860. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Captain and was present at the Battle of Bull Run. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel in 1862, he was assigned to the 8th Army Corps, as chief of staff to General Cadwallader. In July 1863, he was appointed Brigadier General and was in actions at Chattanooga, the Siege of Atlanta, the Battles of Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain and Nashville. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Major General in the Regular Army on March 13, 1865.
After the war, he served as Assistant Adjutant General before retiring after a distinguished military career of forty years. He died of pneumonia at the age of 76.
