Nostalgic 1887 ALS Letter by Union Civil War General John R. Brooke Fort Shaw

  

In this 1887 letter former Union General John R. Brooke responds to the request for an autographed photo from a former comrade, fellow Union General William W.

" Turning nostalgic, Brooke writes that "it does me good to see the names of my former comrades, though I would be very glad to hear their voices, " adding that twenty years of service on the frontier had left him "an exile from home. Brooke was then serving as Colonel of the 3rd U. Infantry at Fort Shaw, Montana. Brooke closes the letter with remark about the cool temperatures that summer, telling Davis that he would need to bring your winter clothing if you came out here.

The letter was written on the first two pages of a 5" x 8" bifolium sheet of unlined paper. It is in very good condition with light toning. Yours of the 13th at hand.

It is a good picture of me as I then was. You say "illustrated autographs, " so I have put mine on the bottom of the picture. I hope it will be as you want it. If not I can send you one arranged to suit you if you will indicate what it is you want in that way. It does me good to see the names of my former comrades, though I would be very glad to hear their voices. Your mercury has been playing queer pranks this summer.
