
She was the widow of General William Babcock Hazen. About the 8th New Hampshire Infantry. The regiment was organized at Camp Currier in Manchester, New Hampshire, and mustered in on December 23, 1861. It was attached to various commands in the Department of the Gulf, participating in General Butler's New Orleans Expedition and the Siege of Port Hudson, where it suffered heavy casualties. In December 1863, the unit's designation was changed to the 2nd New Hampshire Cavalry.
The regiment lost a total of 360 men during its service: 5 officers and 94 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, and 2 officers and 256 enlisted men who died of disease.
