OSGOOD AND COMPANY, BOSTON, IN 1881 This original, first edition, antique book belonged to Gustavus Fox, Assistant Secretary of the Navy and is boldly signed and dated by him in pencil on the front fly, F. Fox - Washington DC, 1881. At the start of the Civil War, he volunteered for service. President Lincoln gave him a temporary appointment in the Navy and sent him in the streamer Baltic to the relief of Fort Sumter. Fox could not relieve the fort before Confederate bombardment forced its surrender, but afterwards he brought away the garrison. On August 1, 1861, Lincoln appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy, an office which he held until the close of the Civil War. This book presents a collection of papers from Civil War veterans regarding various campaigns and battles of the Civil War. The book includes the following topics: General McClellan's plans for the campaign of 1862, and the alleged interference of the government with them. By Brevet Brigadier General John C. THE BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This original, first edition, antique book is in excellent overall condition. The exterior is clean, sharp and bright. The book has solid binding throughout.

The exterior has no bumping, rubbing or discernable edge wear, but has a darkened spot and two small holes in the center of the cover. The exterior is protected in a clear, acid-free, Mylar dust jacket (see photo #3). The interior is clean and in excellent condition. The pages are clean and in excellent condition. The book has no foxing, smudging, stamps or pasteboards.

The book has an inscription and signature of the former Secretary of the Navy from the Civil War era, dated 1881. The book is not an ex-library book.

The book has no looseness or lean and both hinges are solid, except that the front hinge is paper cracked. The book has a complete set of large, foldout maps in the back of the book.
