The following item is an authentic Farmer's Mechanics National Bank check signed by famed Civil War Union General Halbert Eleazer Paine. Paine entered The Civil War as Colonel of The 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment. In 1863, Paine was hand selected by President Abraham Lincoln to be appointed brigadier General of Volunteers. Paine would lead many successful expeditions to the deep South.
During The Battle of Port Hudson, Paine received a wound that would lead to the amputation of his leg. He would return to Washington to oversee defense of the city. After the war he would be brevetted Major General by president Johnson.
This check is in excellent preserved condition and has Paine's signature in nice dark period ink. Paine as he normally did. A fantastic piece of U. Note: The last photo is of General Paine. It is from an internet archive and does not come with the check.
