Loyd Davis, began collecting sheet music in the 1960's up until his passing in 2011. The subtitle states that the composition is Respectfully Dedicated to the Hon. Rufus King, Brigadier General Commanding the 1st Brigade Wisconsin Volunteers which was famously known as the Iron Brigade starting in 1862 (after this sheet music was published). The INCREDIBLE color lithograph on the front cover features Brigadier General Rufus King holding a stars and stripes union flag on a pile of wounded and dying union soldiers with a regimental flag on the top of the pile. In the background an active battle scene is portrayed.

The Iron Brigade, also known as The Black Hats, Black Hat Brigade, Iron Brigade of the West, and originally King's Wisconsin Brigade was an infantry brigade in the Union Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. Although it fought entirely in the Eastern Theater, it was originally composed of the 2nd, 6th and 7th Wisconsin and 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry regiments and was reinforced after Antietam in October 1862 by the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. Noted for its strong discipline, its unique uniform appearance (as shown on the front cover of this piece of sheet music) and its tenacious fighting ability, the Iron Brigade suffered the highest percentage of casualties of any brigade in the war. The nickname "Iron Brigade, " with its connotation of fighting men with iron dispositions, was applied formally or informally to a number of units in the Civil War and in later conflicts. The Iron Brigade of the West was the unit that received the most lasting publicity in its use of the nickname. The brigade fought in the battles of Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Overland, Richmond-Petersburg, and Appomattox. This sheet music is about is about 10" x 13" and is in overall excellent condition including the lithograph on the front cover.
