Mitchell's New General Atlas 1866 Complete Civil War Era Hand Colored Maps. Mitchell's New General Atlas, published in Philadelphia by S. In 1866, is a remarkable First Edition, 2nd State atlas containing 92 original hand-colored maps and plans that capture the United States and the wider world at the dawn of the Reconstruction era. Issued immediately following the Civil War, the atlas preserves a fascinating geographic snapshot of a nation still taking shape, with notable territorial features including Nevada's southern boundary extending into present-day Arizona, the Texas Panhandle remaining within Oklahoma Territory, and Wyoming still incorporated within Dacotah Territory despite being labeled on the maps. Ex-library copy with minimal Kansas State Library markings. Markings include a blue ink stamp on the title page, an additional stamp with penned number on the title page verso, a stamp and penned library name on the Virginia/West Virginia map, and small pencil number lines at the rear endpage and in the blank margins of two maps. No markings were found over any maps other than Virginia/West Virginia. Binding has been repaired, with archival endpapers and a reinforced spine.

Marbled paper boards with quarter buckram show rubbing and age wear. The New York map on page 24 has a tape repair to the fore edge that very slightly covers the map border and a small chip below the repair. All other maps remain complete and clean overall, though a few pages show small smudges, tears, and/or chips in the borders and along edges.
