John Brown Gordon [1832 1904] was an attorney, a farmer, general in the Confederate States Army and a politician in the postwar years. He began his military career in 1861 as a captain of a company of the 6th Alabama Infantry and by the wars end, he was one of Robert E. Lee's most trusted generals. During the war he commanded at the First Battle of Bull Run, the Seven Days Battle, Battle of Malvern Hill, the Maryland Campaign, the Battle of Antietam, the Gettysburg Campaign, the Overland Campaign, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania, the Battle of Cold Harbor, the Valley Campaigns, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign and was present at the surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse. After the war he served as the 53rd Governor of Georgia, and as a United States Senator.
