History of the Bible textbook owned and signed by Civil War General S. R. Gist

  
This textbook is something future Confederate General States Rights Gist had in college at South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina). Gist graduated from the school, then spent a year at Harvard learning law and became a successful lawyer in South Carolina. He grew up with his first cousin, who would become South Carolina's "secession governor, " and served as secretary to his cousin. Gist served as adjutant and inspector general of the state, then became a brigadier general in the Confederate army. He was one of six Confederate generals killed at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864.
