Ambrose Everts Burnside [1824 1881] was a senior American Army officer, lawyer, politician, industrialist and governor of Rhode Island. General Burnside began his military career in 1847 and was a veteran of the Mexican American War. Burnside achieved some of the earliest victories in the Eastern theater of the Civil War. After the war he served as a U. Senator and three term governor of Rhode Island.
