17 October 1889 in Norristown, Pennsylvania was a prominent Union officer during the American Civil War and politician from Pennsylvania. Hartranft was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of First Bull Run (1861) and was colonel of the 51st Pennsylvania Infantry, taking part in numerous campaigns in the east and west, including leading the charge that took Burnside Bridge at the Battle of Antietam (1862) and was brevetted major general by Gen. Grant for his actions at the Battle of Fort Stedman (1865).
He also played an important role in the Lincoln assassination trial as the commander of the Old Capitol Prison and special provost marshal. There is some wear and soiling on the ribbon and medal, the leather attachment at the top has an old rested pin.
